Maths underpins so much of our understanding of the world, and now more than ever, strong mathematical skills are essential for future careers — from engineering and medicine to finance, technology, and beyond. My job is to help every student discover that they are capable of more than they think.
My interest in how we acquire knowledge goes back to my undergraduate years, and it has shaped everything about the way I teach. Drawing on research into cognitive science, working memory, and schema theory, I place great emphasis on the sequencing of learning and on creating explicit connections — between topics, between subjects, and between maths and the wider world. When students see how ideas fit together, understanding becomes lasting rather than temporary.
